Freespire linux

I started looking at Linux after I switched to Mac, they do share some UNIX ties. My old PC had been moved to my kids room mid 2005 and I needed a new OS to replace Windose (yes I do know how it should be spelt) which I grew fed up of with patching and screwed up user accounts. To date the PC has run SuSE, Mandriva and Ubuntu OS, though currently is running Freespire. There are several reasons why for now I have settled on this choice.

  1. Once I knew all my IP numbers and my ISP’s DNS tags, it was a very easy matter to enter them into Freespire’s Network Diagnostic panel. This was the easiest network setup I had done in Linux so far.
  2. Freespire comes with CNR, a Click N Run softwarehouse. Browse, click, confirm, and it downloads and installs the app in the right place. Job done!
  3. It can play MP3 and DVD out of the box so to speak. Most installations require these to be added after.
  4. Both Flashplayer and Real player are also included, essential for the kids to use the BBCi website that uses both of these.

Sounds good. Might have to give it a try myself. I had been thinking of using Unbuntu, but after reading this post I think I’ll try Freespire first.

If you try Ubuntu first, download Easyubuntu. It will add most of the proprietory functionality I mentioned in my post. http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/
